ICU Transfer
coordination during transport. Life Savers Ambulance Services recently managed a high-risk
neonatal transfer involving a new-born baby diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect, who
required mechanical ventilation and prostaglandin support while being shifted from
Haryana to BLK Hospital Delhi.
Case Overview
Soon after birth the baby was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect ASD, a congenital heart
condition that can significantly affect oxygenation and circulation in neonates. Due to the need
for advanced pediatric cardiac care the treating doctors advised an urgent transfer to a
tertiary care center in Delhi.
Recognizing the critical nature of the situation Life Savers Paediatric ICU Ambulance was
deployed to ensure continuity of intensive care during transit.
Patient Condition
- New-born baby with congenital heart disease
- Diagnosis Atrial Septal Defect ASD
- Dependent on mechanical ventilation
- Required continuous prostaglandin infusion for cardiac stability
- High risk of respiratory and circulatory compromise
The combination of cardiac pathology and ventilator dependency made this neonatal transfer
extremely sensitive.
Medical Setup During Transport
The Life Savers ICU ambulance was fully prepared for neonatal cardiac transport and
included:
- Neonatal mechanical ventilator with controlled oxygen delivery
- Continuous prostaglandin infusion support
- Multiparameter monitoring for heart rate oxygen saturation and blood pressure
- Oxygen backup and neonatal airway management equipment
- Emergency medications and resuscitation readiness
A trained medical team accompanied the baby to maintain stability throughout the journey.
During the transfer:
- Ventilator parameters were closely monitored and adjusted
- Prostaglandin infusion was maintained without interruption
- Vital signs were continuously observed
- Thermal care was ensured to prevent hypothermia
- The baby remained under constant medical supervision
Careful monitoring and timely interventions ensured a smooth transfer without deterioration.
Arrival and Handover
Upon arrival at BLK Hospital Delhi the baby was safely handed over to the neonatal cardiac
care team. A detailed clinical handover was provided including ventilator settings infusion details
and observations during transport.
Clinical Perspective
Neonatal transport involving congenital heart disease and prostaglandin support requires
specialized equipment and experienced professionals. Maintaining ventilation and cardiac
circulation during transit is crucial to prevent sudden instability.
Through this successful transfer Life Savers Ambulance Services once again proved its role
as true Life Savers, delivering ICU-level neonatal care beyond hospital settings and ensuring
critically ill newborns receive timely access to advanced treatment.
